Daniel Avery was a witch who married into the Harman family. He was the husband of Sophia Harman and the father of Thea Harman. Little is known about Daniel, save for the fact he died of unknown causes when Thea was young, not long after his wife died in childbirth.
In the novels[]
Daniel is briefly mentioned, though not by name, by his daughter in Spellbinder when she is explaining her family history to Dani Abforth. She also mentions that her father died when she was young and that she has little memory of him to Eric Ross.
Etymology[]
The name Daniel is of Hebrew origin, meaning "God is my judge".
The name Avery is derived from the Old French name for Alfred or the ancient Germanic name Alberich. Alfred is composed of the Old English words aelf, meaning "elf" and raed, meaning "counsel" or "wisdom". Therefore, Avery roughly translates to "elf counsel" or "elf wisdom".
Trivia[]
- It can be assumed that Daniel was a member of Circle Twilight, as his daughter Thea is originally a member of this Circle.
- The ultimate fan guide, interestingly, states that Thea's mother was actually a member of the Avery clan, and that Thea was adopted into the Harman family. However, this contradicts both the novels and the family tree, where Thea's mother is stated as being a Harman, whilst her father has the surname of Avery. There is also no mention of Thea being adopted; indeed, she is said to bear a great resemblance to Hellewise Hearth-Woman, the direct ancestress of the Harman line.
