Night World Elders are Night People hired by the Night World Council to ensure other Night People obey Night World laws. The term Elder seems to refer exclusively to vampires, as no witch or other Night Person has been referred to as an Elder even if they are member of their species governing body (such as the First House of the Shapeshifters, who are referred to by royal titles, or the Inner Circle, who only have the titles of Maiden, Mother and Crone). However, this remains unconfirmed.
If a Night Person suspects another Night Person of breaking any laws they are required to report their suspicions to the Elders. The Elders will then investigate the situation. If they learn that laws have been violated they have the authority to punish the perpetrators as necessary, including carrying out executions. In extreme breaches of the laws the Council may become involved. Although most Elders are loyal to the Night World and uphold its laws and traditions, there are some known Elders, who have broken Night World law, either for personal gain or in pursuit of peace with humankind. Some Elders have even been known to join Circle Daybreak in secret.
