|Cause of Death||
Paula Belizer was a young girl who lived in the same area as Gillian Lennox and Gary Fargeon. She went missing in the woods on Hillcrest Road a year before the events of Dark Angel and later becomes an important figure in the novel's plot.
Paula lived with her parents in the same area as Gillian and her distant cousin Gary. It is possible that, like Gary, she lived in Somerset. A year before the events of Dark Angel, Paula was apparently walking her pet dog along Hillcrest Road when it ran into the woods. Paula chased the dog and accidentally interrupted Gary whilst he was trying to perform a dangerous fire elemental spell. Paula inadvertently broke the protective circle and was burnt to death in an instant by the magical fire, though her dog escaped.
Upon realizing what had happened, a horrified and confused Gary put her body in the boot of his car, intending to take her to hospital. However, as he drove, Gary soon came to the conclusion that there was nothing the doctors could do. Unable to face what he'd done, Gary buried Paula's body in a clearing in the woods, never telling anyone what had really happened. When he was later killed in a drink driving accident, his guilt over Paula's death prevented him from moving on to the afterlife.
Dark Angel Edit
A year later, Paula's body had still not been found. Paula is first mentioned when Gillian hears what she believes is a child crying in the woods along Hillcrest Road and she immediately thinks that it could be Paula, though she soon dismisses this as being "irrational". Paula is mentioned again towards the end of the novel, when Gary tells Gillian what really happened to her and how he was responsible for Paula's death. He shows Gillian where Paula's body is buried, revealing that police passed a mere foot away from the burial site whilst they were searching for her.
Gillian and David Blackburn later dig up her body and inform the local police, saying that they stumbled across it accidentally whilst building a snow fort. The police exhume Paula's body and Paula's father also arrives at the site. He states that he believes Paula is now in a better place and that he forgives whoever did this to her, allowing Gary to finally be free and move on to the afterlife.
