Phaedra Oryx was a lamia vampire, the wife of Tormentil Redfern and mother of Delos Redfern. Through her marriage to Tormentil, Phaedra was Queen of the Dark Kingdom and a member of the Redfern Family. She had died by the events of Black Dawn.
History[]
Delos never mentions Phaedra, nor does she appear in any of his memories, so it can be assumed she died before Delos was old enough to remember her properly. A slave named Old Mender mentions that she was Phaedra's seamstress before her death, "when he [Delos] was little", further indicating that Delos was very young when his mother died. Phaedra knew of the prophecies of the Wild Powers and Old Mender either overheard or was told of the part of the prophecy relating to the power of blue fire:
In blue fire, the final darkness is banished.
In blood, the final price is paid.
It is unclear if Phaedra was aware her son was a Wild Power (Delos was confirmed to be a Wild Power at the age of four), and it is unknown if she agreed with her husband's plan to use Delos as a living weapon.

- The name Phaedra means "bright" in Greek. In Ancient Greek mythology, Phaedra was the wife of King Theseus and daughter of Minos. After Phaedra's stepson Hippolytus angered the goddess Aphrodite, she got her revenge by making Phaedra fall madly in love with him. After Hippolytus rejected Phaedra, she was devastated and committed suicide, but not before leaving behind a note for her husband implying Hippolytus assaulted her. Infuriated, Theseus placed a curse on his son, eventually causing him to die in a chariot accident. Like the mythological Phaedra, this Phaedra was also a queen.
- Phaedra's maiden name, Oryx, is a type of antelope, native to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
- Interestingly, the myth of Queen Phaedra was mentioned by Thea Harman, when she was comparing her manipulative and troublemaking cousin Blaise to the goddess Aphrodite. It should also be noted that Phaedra, via her marriage, is very distantly related to Blaise.
- Phaedra's name could be considered a more traditional witch name than a lamia one - witches, or at least the Harman family, often name their children after mythological figures or deities. There are also several Harmans whose names translate to "bright" or "light", or have Greek origins. However, her surname, which is a kind of antelope, would be considered a traditional lamia name.
- In Black Dawn, Phaedra is only referred to as "the Queen"; her name was only revealed on the family tree.
